April is National Car Care Month and the Regional Air Quality Council has teamed up with NAPA Auto Care Centers to host the “Keep it Clean” Car Care Fair / Gas Can Exchange – a community outreach event developed to educate motorists on the importance of maintaining their vehicles.  A well-maintained vehicle will cost less, run more efficiently, and help reduce ozone-causing emissions, which trigger respiratory and other health problems.

Motorists who participated received a FREE 30-point visual inspection by NAPA-certified technicians and advice on improvements they can make to keep their vehicle running clean.  New, state-of-the-art vehicles come equipped with improved emission technology that reduces emissions by up to 95 percent.  However, when neglected by their owners, those new vehicles can produce more emissions than their predecessors of the 1970s (source: The Car Care Council, www.carcarecouncil.org).

In addition to a free visual inspection, participating motorists received a FREE non-spill, non-permeable gas can when they trade in an old gas can.  Pull-N-Save, an automotive recycling center in Aurora, partnered with NAPA and RAQC to properly dispose of any oil and/or gas collected and to recycle both plastic and metal gas cans.   Although Pull-N-Save properly disposed of any residual oil and gas, we asked that all motorists properly dispose of all fluids before trading in their gas can.  Call your local city government or your local health department to obtain information on proper disposal methods and options.

Kiwanis Club volunteers, along with the City and County of Broomfield Public Health and Environment Division, provided car seat safety checks at the Broomfield, Boulder, and Longmont locations.
